Levantine Hill Estate (frequently misspelled as “Laventine Hill”) is one of the most prominent, ambitious, and transformative luxury wine developments in the modern history of the Yarra Valley. Established in 2009 by property magnate and philanthropist Elias Jreissati, the estate injected an unprecedented level of capital—reputedly over AU$100 million — into the region. This huge investment altered the Yarra Valley landscape in several ways:

1. Championing “Ultra-Luxury” Australian Fine Wine

Levantine Hill challenged price and prestige ceilings for Australian cool-climate wines.

  • The Premium Arms Race: Instead of being traditional and keeping prices of their wines low they went big and global. Launching a AUD $800 bottle – setting itself apart from others
  • Acclaimed Winemaking Power: Appointed a highly respected winemaker who knew what he was doing and delivered critically acclaimed, elegant, and food-friendly wines

2. Pushing Viticultural Boundaries & Varietal Innovation

The estate famously defied local experts when planting its initial vineyards on a hill deemed “too steep and too rocky to cultivate”.

  • Engineering Terraces: Using a diamond-tipped drilling rig to clear underlying rock, they turned this steep terrain into an architectural triumph of viticulture. The unique elevations and microclimates mimic the Grand Cru vineyards of Chablis, France, delivering low-yielding, intensely flavoured fruit – overcoming nature !
  • Alternative Varieties: Alongside masterclass expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Bridgeman (the winemaker ) has pushed the boundaries of the valley by introducing and experimenting with classic Bordeaux and Mediterranean blends—such as some of the first Semillon planted in the Yarra in 30 years.

3. Elevating Wine Tourism to a World-Class Level

Before Levantine Hill, much of the Yarra Valley relied on rustic, traditional, and boutique cellar doors. Levantine Hill brought high-concept luxury and architectural marvels to the region.

  • Architectural Icons: They commissioned Fender Katsalidis (the famed architects behind Hobart’s MONA ((see my Moorilla article) and Melbourne’s Eureka Tower) to build a striking, state-of-the-art AU$20 million curved barrel-vault winery and futuristic cellar door.
  • High-End Gastronomy: They have established a world class restaurant featuring elite Mediterranean-inspired pairings, drawing high-net-worth local and international travellers.
  • Helicopter Tourism: They popularised seamless, luxury heli-tourism directly from downtown Melbourne, making the valley instantly accessible to luxury travellers

A Yarra Valley Icon

Nestled in the picturesque Yarra Valley of Victoria, Levantine Hill is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most prestigious and ambitious modern wine producers. The winery operates with a clear vision: to craft uncompromised, world-class cool-climate wines that rival the finest European counterparts.

Why Levantine Hill Matters

The estate is celebrated for its uncompromising, “no-expense-spared” approach to viticulture and winemaking. By partnering with legendary winemaker Paul Bridgeman and utilising striking architecture, Levantine Hill has quickly risen to critical acclaim, ranking among the top wineries in Australia. It bridges the gap between traditional winemaking and modern luxury, offering an immersive destination complete with an acclaimed restaurant and art collection.

The Unique Terroir

The true secret to Levantine Hill’s success lies in its dramatic and distinct terroir:

  • Challenging Slopes: The estate is planted on a steep, rocky hill that experts initially deemed impossible to cultivate.
  • Microclimates: Rising from the Yarra River, the vineyards feature steep clay-loam slopes, amphitheatres, and varied elevations that mimic the conditions of regions like Burgundy and Bordeaux.
  • Complexity: This variation in soil and aspect produces ultra-low-yielding vines that yield intensely concentrated, complex grapes—allowing the estate to produce benchmark Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Bordeaux-style blends.

The Wines – A Layered Portfolio Levantine Hill operates across three key tiers:

Estate Range – accessible, varietally pure

Family Paddock Series – single-site, premium expressions

Optume Collection – flagship, ultra-low production wines

Contributions to the Winery

Dr. Jreissati has made profound contributions to Levantine Hill, transforming it from a steep, rugged hillside into one of Australia’s premier wine estates:

  • Unprecedented Financial Investment: He drove what is widely considered one of the largest modern-day investments in the Yarra Valley wine industry (exceeding $100 million) a “no-expense-spared” approach.
  • The “Family Paddock” Legacy: He championed the painstaking development of the estate’s most challenging, rocky slopes, naming the resulting ultra-premium single-vineyard blocks (Colleen’s, Samantha’s, Melissa’s, and Katherine’s Paddock) after his wife and daughters.
  • Luxury and Tourism: Beyond winemaking LH became a world-class destination by integrating architecture, restaurant, and fine art into the winery.

There are wineries that follow a blueprint — and then there are those that quietly redraw it. Levantine Hill sits firmly in the latter camp. It’s a producer that blends ambition with precision, heritage with modernity, and above all, a relentless pursuit of detail. This is not just Yarra Valley winemaking — it’s Yarra Valley reimagined.

The Grape Wizard’s Verdict

In the broader wine community, Levantine Hill holds a reputation as one of the most audacious, high-end, and ambitious modern wine projects in Australia.

Critics and wine authorities differ their opinion, mainly through a few points:

Discussion Over Luxury and Price Points: Because of its “no-expense-spared” approach, striking architectural cellar door, and ultra-premium pricing (including top-tier releases stretching past hundreds of dollars a bottle), it is often viewed as a symbol of modern wine tourism luxury. While some traditionalists initially raised eyebrows at the sheer scale of the commercial and architectural statement, the wine community widely respects the estate for backing up its high-end aesthetic with genuinely exceptional, meticulous winemaking.

Unprecedented Scale and Ambition: Renowned wine critics have hailed it as one of the most ambitious wine projects in Australian history. Prominent wine writers have compared its holistic, luxury-driven model more closely related to top-tier Napa Valley or Bordeaux estates than traditional Australian wineries.

Critical Acclaim for Winemaking: Under winemaker Paul Bridgeman, the wines consistently earn high scores from major critics and wine companions. Reviewers frequently praise their structure, complexity, and distinct regional character—particularly their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

The Grape Wizard conclusion ….

In my opinion is that of Levantine Hill has successfully moved from an brave high-priced concern into a globally recognised benchmark for ultra-luxury Australian cool-climate wine. They have also not only grown in popularity on the international stage they have also done it on the domestic stage. No longer seen as a ‘flashy snazzy pants’ seen now as judged as a world-class cool-climate powerhouse defined by structural precision, intense texturing, and laser-focused winemaking that justifies its status..

So what do i make of it. Levantine Hill has had to work hard to get where it is. Not just money has got it here, ambition, determination and a huge heap of impossibility overcome.

What stands out is not just the quality — but the intent behind it. Every decision, from vineyard placement to varietal selection, is deliberate. This is not a winery finding its way.
It’s one that knew exactly where it wanted to go from the start.

And it’s already there. Would i come back – you betcha !
